Lisa is Professor of Medical Anthropology and Social Sciences and an NIHR Senior Investigator at the University of Warwick. Her academic journey began with deeply rooted ethnographic work on displacement and the lives of refugees—a decade immersed in understanding how people navigate uprootedness, suffering, and the longing to belong. These themes—suffering and belonging—remain at the heart of her work, flowing through her writing, her research, and her community engagements.
Over the years, Lisa expanded her anthropological lens to explore the intricate landscapes of health and illness. Her research bridges the worlds of medicine, development studies, social science and the humanities, always seeking dialogue between disciplines often held apart. With a fierce commitment to equity and inclusion, her work is distinguished by genuine community collaboration and creativity—frequently shaped in partnership with artists, storytellers, and those whose voices are rarely centred in research.
Lisa has led major interdisciplinary research programmes across the UK and globally, securing over £24 million in funding from national research bodies, with more than £10 million as Principal Investigator. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, including several books, and remains deeply committed to public engagement—curating exhibitions, producing podcasts, and writing regularly for audiences far beyond academia. Her work continues to challenge, connect, and reimagine what health research can be when it begins by listening.
