Sam works as a postgraduate researcher at the University of Kent’s School of Arts and the Kent and Medway Medical School. She works across projects researching the cultural meaning and lived experiences of wellbeing and illness through humanities and creative arts scholarship, focusing on the role of media, narrative, and creative practice in enhancing health and wellbeing. She holds a master’s degree in film and came to academia after a career working in film production, media and creative industries marketing, PR and events.
Sam's research interests include the empirical exploration of affective responses to film using naturalised methodological approaches, ontology of the image, film as cultural artefact and the social practice contexts of our engagement with the moving image, particularly the contrast between institutional and cultural settings.
Sam is about to undertake her PhD exploring the role of affect in the appraisal of moving image evidence within the criminal justice system and has been awarded an Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship to study at the University of New England, New South Wales.
