Around one in five women experience mental health problems during pregnancy or within the first two years of giving birth. Perinatal mental health problems are not often discussed openly because of feelings of embarrassment, shame and fear of the consequences. Yet, according to NHS figures, over 57,000 new and expectant mums in England and Wales have received specialist support for mental health problems over the last year, up a third on last year’s figures.
This audio documentary was created with recordings made during one-to-one interviews with new mothers that generously participated in the INTERACT study, a creative exploration of the lived experiences of Kent's unheard communities.
